When it comes to running a business there is always so much to think about and consider.

You have the joys of building up a business and turning it from nothing into something. Perhaps starting out at home and moving up to a business location where you hold stock or manage people even. Your business may have started out as an idea now be your sole income and livelihood.

But, while there is so much to running your business from accounts, and marketing to ensuring that you are present online and offering a good customer experience, you also need to think about the practical side of things. One thing that can get overlooked is your business security. Not just physically, but also digitally. We wanted to share with you some of the things you should consider to ensure that your business is protected at all times.   

Security cameras and alarms

One of the obvious things you can consider doing to ensure your business is physically protected is looking at the ways you protect it from opportunists. Alarm systems are a really easy thing to install and can often be a direct way to ensure that your building and everything in it is protected. But you also need to ensure that you use other things at your disposal and this may include things like security cameras. These days these things can actually be linked up to your phone, enabling you to see what is going on in real-time. Sometimes these systems can be linked to local law enforcement as well as make contact with you should something be happening. It helps you to feel safe in the knowledge that your business is safe when you are not around.

Cameras inside

It is all well and good protecting the outside, and while so many people think about this option, you should also think about the inside. Not just when you are not there, but to also protect you when it comes to the people you have working for you. Installing cameras could make a big difference. Plus if anyone was to avoid your exterior security measures, then having cameras inside could help you to solve problems with burglaries etc. Sometimes people may think that indoor cameras can be intrusive, but these days so many people have them installed in their business locations and for staff, it can also be seen as an added security measure for them as well.

What about the access side of things?

Your business may need to have people accessing it at different times. Perhaps people work late, they start early, or generally need to be able to access your business location on a day-to-day basis. But, this can also be a big problem if you don’t get a handle on your security when it comes to access. This is when thinking about using different options such as keys and double locks, security locks that can only be opened with pin numbers or security keys and cards. It helps you to manage who has access and even when your business is being accessed.

Is your business protected digitally?

One of the biggest things we can forget to do is to protect our businesses digitally. We are all aware of how to keep things running physically, but digitally we are just as much at risk. If a hacker was to hack your system they may be able to access payment details for customers, personal information that can be used criminally as well as stealing information about your business that could cause huge problems for you. Having the right sort of firewall in place, as well as security measures like passwords and regular updates and backing up can help you to secure your business digitally.

Changing passwords

Finally, you may want to think about the smallest of security measures and that is passwords. It may sound so simple, but when an ex-employee leaves, if they had a password or pin to access the business or to access specific files then this information could be used against you. Change things like PIN numbers and passwords regularly, and also encourage anyone working for you to do the same. This can really help improve the security of your business and as it is the easiest thing to do, it is often the thing that is overlooked the most.
