How to celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day 2019
Seadogs, scallywags and even landlubbers will not want to miss Talk Like A Pirate Day.
Held every year on September 19th, this parodic holiday is the perfect excuse to speak and dress like a peg-legged, treasure-hunting seafarer – think Captain Hook, Blackbeard and Jack Sparrow – just for a laugh.
How Talk Like A Pirate Day started
Talk Like A Pirate Day started out in 1995, when friends John Baurs and Mark Summers took up racquetball in a bid to shed a few pounds and get healthy. Baurs let out a cry of ‘Arrrgh’ whilst straining to reach a long shot. From that moment on, the friends started talking to one another in pirate slang, to make their workout more fun.
“That be a fine cannonade,” one would shout after a particularly-impressive shot. “Now watch as I fire a broadside straight into your yardarm!”
The pair had such a good time that they agreed to spend one day of every year talking to each other like pirates. When comic and award-winning author Dave Barry heard about their genius idea, he got involved to help turn Talk Like A Pirate Day into an official holiday. It’s now been celebrated every year across the world since 2002.
