Finding balance in a digital age

Finding balance in a digital age

Digital habits

Most Britons look at their phones within the first 5 minutes of waking up and continue to check them every 12 minutes throughout the day. It has been reported that a quarter of adults spend over 40 hours a week on the internet. For the first time it has become more common to communicate through apps such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger and to send messages instead of making actual phone calls.

Not being able to access internet has become a stress factor and a lot of people feel a need to be connected at all times. At the moment, there seems to be a gap between the human desire for innovation and technological advancement and the human need for connection to other people and the world around us.

Although these new digital habits of ours have come with great opportunities, it has also come with growing rates of different online-related addictions. Knowing when we need to take a break or limit our time online is therefore very important in order for us to reap the benefits of the internet without compromising our health.

Overindulgence online

Overindulging in any respect can be harmful whether it involves technology or something completely different. Finding the balance in how we choose to interact with everyday technology is very important so that we don’t become slaves of our own creation.

There is no denying the rise of social media and the impact it has had on us. Social media has become integral in the way we communicate with each other and express ourselves online. But it is not only social media that has become widely popular across the world, the online casino industry has equally boomed in recent years and has become one of the largest online industries globally.

Whilst too much of either can have consequences, both are two very entertaining aspects of the internet that in moderation is fun. The aim of acknowledging how much time we spend online is not to suggest we should go off it completely. Our lives are completely tied to technology today and more so for the next generation so building a healthy relationship with it therefore becomes vital not just for ourselves but also for our children.

Ways to find balance

When being connected becomes a stress factor, it might be a good time to take a step back and see what you can do to find balance.

A simple thing you can to is to turn off notifications from certain apps and decide only to check them once a day, not being available to everyone at all times will make a difference. Other things may include not checking your phone when in meetings or when you are having a meal with someone and if you have had a day full of digital noise simply turning your devices off can be a great idea.

To put it simply, the internet has come with fantastic tools as well as entertainment and it does improve our lives to a great extent. But it is also healthy to take a step back sometimes and enjoy the company of the people around us without being glued to our phones. Finding just the right balance of both worlds is key.
