Film and TV locations in Norfolk

Film and TV lovers – listen up! Norfolk boasts a rich history that has been captured on the big and small screens alike.

From stunning coastlines to historic buildings, our beautiful county provides a perfect backdrop for many film and TV locations that continue to attract visitors from far and wide.

Here are seven noteworthy locations in Norfolk that have graced the screens. How many of these did you know about?

1. Holkham Beach:
Known for its vast expanse of golden sand and rolling dunes, Holkham Beach was featured in the final scene of the film “Shakespeare in Love.” Visitors to this stunning location can stroll along the same shore where Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes shared their iconic moment. No spoilers, but it’s definitely worth a watch.

2. Blickling Hall:
This magnificent Jacobean mansion, with its grand architecture and beautiful gardens, has been a popular filming location for many period dramas, including “The Duchess” starring Keira Knightley. Visitors can wander through the same rooms that once featured in this historical drama. We visited recently for Mr Iceni’s half marathon, but it’s on our list of places to revisit because of how captivating the architecture was to both us and our kids.

3. Sandringham Estate:
The private residence of the British royal family, Sandringham Estate has made appearances in several TV shows and films, including the popular series “The Crown.” Visitors can explore the stunning gardens and parkland surrounding this royal residence.

4. Norwich Cathedral:
A masterpiece of Norman architecture, Norwich Cathedral has been featured in a number of films and TV shows, including “The Da Vinci Code.” Visitors can marvel at the intricate stone carvings and stained glass windows that make this cathedral a true gem of Norfolk. Mr Iceni’s graduation ceremony was held here, and it was a bit of a challenge focusing on that when there is so much to take in just looking at the surroundings in and outside.

5. Great Yarmouth:
This traditional seaside town has been a popular filming location for many British TV shows and films, including the comedy series “Alan Partridge.” Visitors can stroll along the vibrant promenade and enjoy the classic seaside attractions that have made Great Yarmouth a beloved destination. It’s one of our family’s favourite seasides to visit – although I didn’t visit as a child, it does remind me a lot of growing up in the ‘80s.

6. Thetford Forest:
A sprawling forest that offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures, Thetford Forest has been featured in several films, including “Dad’s Army.” Visitors can explore the picturesque woodland trails and enjoy the beauty of this natural setting. If you’re a fan of the show, there is a museum in Thetford as well as a section of Bressingham
Steam Museum that is dedicated to it.

7. Sheringham:
A quintessential English seaside town, Sheringham has been featured in various TV shows and films, including the crime drama “Kingdom.” Visitors can soak up the coastal charm of this picturesque town and enjoy the stunning views of the North Sea.

Whether you’re a film buff or simply looking to explore the beautiful landscapes of Norfolk, these seven locations offer a glimpse into the cinematic world that has been captured in this enchanting county.

From historic landmarks to breathtaking scenery, Norfolk provides a wealth of opportunities for visitors to immerse themselves in the magic of the big and small screens.
