Tips For Decluttering Before Moving House

Tips For Decluttering Before Moving House

Moving days come with mixed blessings. First, you’re excited about moving to a new home and starting a new life.

Then, there’s the stress of packing and cleaning up before you move. And many people dread the second part. But decluttering before moving day can help make the moving process less stressful. Beyond that, it offers many benefits, including saving money time, and making money by selling the things you don’t need, and making your new home a lot easier to clean and organise. Here are some tips for making your house clutter-free before moving house.

1. Have a plan

Decluttering can take a lot of time, depending on how many belongings you have to move. It helps to start as soon as possible, ideally months before your moving day. Plan how you’ll go about it. For example, what rooms to start with, what items start packing early, which days and times are ideal for packing and cleaning, etc. And it’s not a bad idea to get friends and loved ones to assist as much as possible, which leads to the next point.

2. Get some helping hands

If you have loads of stuff to get rid of, consider getting a pair of helping hands, preferably professional ones, if you can afford them. Yes, it may cost you a little more, but considering how much time you will save and the stress you’ll avoid will be worth it. You can hire a moving company that offers packing services to help pack the things you need. You can also hire a cleaning company to help tidy the home and take the burden off your shoulders. You can even speak with your current landlord to hire an end-of-tenancy or pre tenancy cleaning expert to clean the home to take that burden off you.

3. Decide what to do with the things you don’t need

A major headache will be what to do with the things you’re getting rid of. And the earlier you start deciding on that, the better, as you don’t want to have heaps and boxes of unwanted stuff taking up space. There are three main options here – you can sell the items, donate them, or get rid of them as trash. If you want to sell them, decide on their value and how to sell them, keeping in mind how much time you have (or may not have). If you want to donate them, start finding the right recipients as soon as possible. And if you choose to eliminate them as thrash, consider hiring a waste company to eliminate them for you.

4. Don’t get stuck!

regular decluttering

Unlike regular decluttering, decluttering before moving comes with time limits, so you want to keep it going without getting stuck. Deciding on sentimental items or what items to keep or get rid of can waste your time, so keep this in mind. To avoid this, create a ‘maybe pile’ for the stuff you’re unsure of. This way, you can keep moving and stick with your decluttering schedule.
