If you have young children, make sure the car has ISOFIX anchor points to securely install child seats.

A family car needs to offer plenty of room, not just for passengers but also for all the daily essentials. Consider how many seats you need and whether the car offers flexible seating arrangements.  

Don’t forget about the boot capacity. You’re likely to need space for school bags, food shops, or even a holiday’s worth of luggage. Look for cars with versatile storage options like split-folding rear seats, which allow you to adjust the space depending on your needs. Some cars also have additional storage compartments, which are perfect for stashing small items out of sight.  

Running costs and fuel efficiency 

High demand for fuel and potential maintenance can make running a family car costly. It’s important to keep this in mind when choosing a model. A car that consumes more fuel will increase your monthly outgoings, while a more fuel-efficient vehicle will save you money in the long run. 

Before making a decision, check the car’s fuel consumption ratings, as well as the road tax costs. A car’s tax band is determined by its CO2 emissions, so an eco-friendlier model will cost you less. Don’t overlook insurance either. Some models will be significantly cheaper to insure than others.  

New vs used cars 

When it comes to family cars, buying new might seem like the obvious choice. However, purchasing used cars can offer excellent value, especially if you’re willing to compromise on age or model.
