Data from vehicle valuation experts CAP Automotive suggests that the Mazda3 beats many similar sized rivals in terms of average forecasted pound note depreciation.

Crushed competition includes the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Peugeot 308, Toyota Auris, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf.

So let’s look more closely at the latest Mazda3 Hatchback to see why it’s so worthy.

Due to its low-slung deportment, the Mazda3 is relatively distinctive and it’s one of the lightest members of its class. Much of this weight-saving is attributable to the improved use of high-tensile and ultra-high tensile steels in the Mazda3’s bodyshell. It’s been increased from 50 to 60 per cent to create a strong and impact resistant structure.

I tested the Mazda3 2.2D 150ps Hatchback Sport Nav. It offers accurate handling, with zero to 62mph achieved in 8.1 seconds. Top speed is 130mph. Of course, when you’re on the road munching thousands of miles a year, your own well-being is never far from your mind. For that reason, it’s reassuring to know the Mazda3 is one of the safest cars on the UK’s roads after receiving a top five star safety rating in Euro NCAP tests.

The Mazda3 Hatch comes with many airbags as well as tech known as Smart City Brake Support, which helps to reduce or prevent low-speed collisions by automatically applying the brakes if you fail to. The car also has Hill Hold Assist fitted to put a stop to roll back on inclines.

Further kit includes the model’s eponymous sat-nav; alloy wheels; air-conditioning; power-folding heated mirrors; leather steering wheel; trip computer; radio/CD with six speaker audio system; colour touch screen; USB/iPod connectivity and Bluetooth. The only annoyance in the cabin is the handbrake; it’s fitted too close to the driver’s seat.

All things considered, the five-door, front wheel-drive hatchback pulls well and has generous cabin space. It’s also efficient, returning up to 68.9mpg on the combined cycle. The icing on the cake is the athletic design that conveys presence, both on the road and in the company car park.
