Alex Wisemen Interviews Laura White

Alex Wisemen Interviews Laura White

I have had the pleasure of interviewing a number of singers in this great magazine but very rarely do you find a singer/songwriter agreeing to an interview on a Saturday morning at 10am. Now I promised I wouldn’t put that in the interview but quite frankly I think it sets the scene. There’s Laura all calm and collected and in BED. Me on the other hand well I’d been pacing around for 2 hours by the time she phoned. Laura White is one of the most talented singer & songwriters in this country and I can never do an interview which gives her enough credit but I am going to try.

I started by asking about the X Factor [Laura was a contestant back in 2008 and finished 8th] ‘it was amazing! It gives you a massive fan base. But all I wanted to do was write my songs and get my music out there!!’ It was an incredible year on the show and featured Alexandra Burke and of course JLS!

Laura now has two careers going one as a brilliant singer but another as a writer. Laura has already been nominated for a Grammy nomination for New York Raining (awesome song!) which is absolutely incredible!! I asked who she has written for…wait for it…’Rita Ora, Jess Glynne & Alicia Keys’ I know I was silenced too!! But none of that was name dropping Laura was excited to tell me as I was listening. The thing which amazes me is that she has had absolutely no training it’s down to pure talent and practice ‘I gigged everywhere I could and played every venue possible. I stayed strong with who I am. All the music I write and play is my taste and the music I want to hear’. Laura openly admits that she turned down professional contracts after the show but decided to do it her own way and now we flash forward to 2016…

Laura has just signed a contract with ‘peermusic’ who are absolutely ‘fantastic’ (and it’s the same label as Mel C!!) and is now working very hard to finish her second EP which will come out next February it promises to be ‘authentic’. I did try to persuade her to release on vinyl ‘but not yet’ (don’t worry vinyl fans I shall keep on at her about it!). A single from the EP has already been released ‘Martha’ to a rave reaction! I did question is it a good thing getting reaction so quickly? ‘I love feedback I’m old fashioned girl’.

I asked if we will see any live gigs next year…and there are four dates:-
30th Jan – iluvlive Hotlist show, Zigfrid Van Underbelly, London
8th Feb – 2Funky Music Cafe, Leicester
9th Feb – Fallow Cafe, Manchester
21st Feb – The Square Club, Bristol

It really is fascinating to speak to someone who loves their industry as much as Laura does. I wish her all the luck in the world and like she said ‘I’m only just starting’.
