Young eco-warrior hopes to save the planet and fundraise for rescued animals

George Goode

Seven-year-old George Goode, from Norwich, England, is keen to make a difference to the world around him.

As a committed vegan, he feels passionate about looking after animals and our planet. Local residents regularly see him out and about picking up dangerous and unsightly litter. George is a firm believer in community and loves chatting to people as they walk past. However, should it really be down to him to pick up the rubbish that other people leave behind?

Now, George is hoping to make an even bigger impression and raise money by being sponsored for his litter picking to help a micro sanctuary close to his heart. He is now fundraising to help The Goode Life UK, which helps elderly and disabled animals. This sanctuary also helps to rehome cats all over the world.

Goode Life UK

Dedicated animal lover, George, wishes to predominantly raise awareness of animals that often get overlooked as well as the importance of looking after the planet and raising some money at the same time. Furthermore, he hopes that other children and adults who see his hard work and enthusiasm will be inspired to do something similar within their local communities.

Some litter facts from Keep Britain Tidy:

Did you know…

  • Over two million bits of litter are dropped every day in the UK?
  • Cleaning up litter costs the UK over £1billion every year?
  • People feel safer living and being areas with less litter?
  • Cigarette butts are classed as litter? So, think again before stubbing yours out and abandoning it on the floor.

How can you help?

The biggest thing you can do to help is to throw your litter in the bin. In some areas, you may struggle to find a bin. In that case, save your rubbish and take it home with you.

If you come across a heavily littered area, contact your local authority. The more specific you can be about the location, the better.

Some local communities have litter pickers that people can borrow to help clean up the area. In addition, Norfolk councils support Nigel Ford’s ‘Love Norfolk Hate Litter’ campaign – an initiative attempting to get everyone to do their bit and help clean up the county.

Educate your children and those around you that littering causes significant damage to the environment, could injure or kill animals, and attracts unwanted vermin as well as looking unpleasant.
