The Growing Menace of Mould in London: A Health Crisis Lurking in the Shadows

The Growing Menace of Mould in London

The rise of mould in London has become an alarming issue, affecting residents’ health and the quality of their living spaces.

According to a recent study conducted by AirFresh Mould Removal London, a mould removal service based in the city, 62.38% of respondents have reported mould issues in their properties. As mould continues to spread across the capital, health concerns and calls for action increase.

The study revealed that the percentage of respondents affected by mould varies across London: North London reported 46.15%, South London 78.13%, East London 59.38%, and West London 63.64%. Disturbingly, 51.06% of tenants and 74.07% of homeowners have a mould issue in their properties. Moreover, 42.11% of respondents who do not currently have a mould issue have had one in the past five years.

Mould is often found in the bathroom (68.35%) and the bedroom (44.3%). The UK Association of Mould Experts, a mould accreditation body for mould experts in the UK, warns that this widespread issue is not to be taken lightly. In a statement, they said, “Mould infestations in residential properties pose serious health risks to occupants, particularly those with respiratory issues, allergies, and compromised immune systems. It is vital for residents and property owners to take action and address mould problems promptly.”

Fortunately, 87.24% of respondents are aware of the health risks associated with mould, and 72.15% have taken steps to address the issue. Respondents who have had mould for more than a year are most likely to call a professional (31.25%). Additionally, 51.49% of respondents have a dehumidifier in their home, 80.20% have a good source of ventilation, 50.5% have an air purifier, 44.55% have pets, and 76.24% have plants.

Jo Powell, the owner of Mould Management, a mould specialist company covering South East London & Kent, shared her opinion on the matter: “The prevalence of mould in London properties highlights the need for increased awareness and proactive measures. Simple actions, such as improving ventilation, using dehumidifiers, and maintaining a clean environment, can significantly reduce the risk of mould growth. However, in more severe cases, professional help is necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of the occupants.”

In conclusion, the rise of mould in London properties is a concerning issue that demands immediate attention. With a significant percentage of the population affected, it is essential for residents and property owners to take preventive measures and seek professional help when necessary. By addressing this growing menace, Londoners can protect their health and enjoy a better quality of life.
