Hair Care & Styling: 8 Tips Every Aspiring Male Model Must Know

Most men spend very little time in the bathroom, which means they tend to stick to a single routine to make that happen.

Unfortunately, rushing through the routine tends to leave the hair improperly nourished.

This shouldn’t be the case. A man’s hair requires as much care and protection as those of a woman – this is especially true for aspiring young models.

While most men may have shorter hair, it doesn’t necessarily mean it needs less care. To make sure you deal with your hair the right way, this article covers eight of the most valuable tips about hair care and styling.

1.  Avoid Over-washing It

One prevalent hair care mistakes that most men make is over-washing their hair. Although this might seem like a good way to keep your hair squeaky clean, it is actually counterproductive in keeping your hair healthy.

Washing your hair using shampoo very often tend to remove the natural oils from your scalp. Remember that these oils are your friend since they provide much-needed hydration to keep your scalp from flaking or drying.

This isn’t recommended even for men with short buzzcuts, but it is most definitely a big no-no for those with longer hair.

Keep in mind that you only need to wash your hair two to four times a week. Also, make sure that you condition your hair every day. This will ensure that your hair stays healthy by replenishing the natural oils that were stripped away from your scalp.

2.  Be Careful When Choosing a Shampoo

Aside from doing it too often, shampooing using just any product is another common mistake that men make.

When you wash your hair with cheap shampoo, you risk damaging it from the harsh ingredients that most of these products contain. Like washing too often, this also strips away the essential oils from your scalp that are necessary to keep hair healthy.

For this very reason, you must make sure that you pick a product with a gentle formula. Those made using natural ingredients and are free from sulfates are most recommended.

3.  Use egg as a conditioner

Conditioning your hair every day is a must for both men and women. These products offer much-needed moisture replenishment for your hair and scalp, especially after getting “cleaned” with shampoos.

However, men might find it quite expensive to use such a product every single day. For those who are looking for a more affordable alternative, you can try using egg instead. Eggs are filled with proteins and minerals that can make your hair extra healthy.

To use egg as a conditioner, separate the egg yolk from the whites. Then, apply the egg yolk onto your hair. Massage it thoroughly so it would penetrate deep into the scalp. Leave it on for several minutes before washing.

4.  Know your hair type and the right way to care for it

Haircare also varies depending on the type of hair you have. This means that you should know what type of hair you have – be it thin, straight, dry, or curly – and buy products that are appropriate for it.

For example, those with curly hair need to use hair care products that provide more moisture. On the other hand, guys with thinning hair require those that offer a volumizing effect.

5.  Towel-dry your hair gently

When drying your hair without the help of a blow dryer, you probably tend to rub it with a towel aggressively. This is wrong.

Instead, you should dab a towel on your wet locks. This will prevent wavy or curly hair from becoming frizzy and may decrease hair volume for any type of hair.

6.  Use styling products correctly

Wax, cream, paste, clay, gel, or pomade – whichever you choose to use, it is important that you know the proper way of applying these styling products. Depending on the look you’re after, you should also make sure to pick the right one.

For instance, if you’re going for a casual, messy look, then clays and pastes are the best styling products for you. Alternatively, slick hair can be achieved using gel.

As for their application, clay, wax, and paste should be massaged thoroughly onto the hair to prevent them from clumping hair together.

Meanwhile, you should make sure that you work creams and gels onto your hair while it is still wet (towel-dried, not dripping). After that, be sure to comb it up using your fingers or a standard comb to get that sleek appearance.

7.  Volumize thin hair

Adding volume to thinning hair is necessary to achieve balance in your look. It is also a great way to get attention when you pose for the camera or try out for casting calls.

For this styling tip, you probably would want to try a pompadour look ala Johnny Bravo. When doing so, be sure to ask your barber to match it with a taper or a fade. This makes such a classic hairstyle look more modern.

To achieve a volumized hair, use a blow dryer while combing your hair up at the same time. This will help your locks stay up.

8.  Look for your natural part

When parting your hair, it is best not to force it. Instead, use the natural one.

Everyone – men and women – has a natural parting of their hair, you just need to find it. To do so, simply comb all your hair back and look for a natural separation.

Using your natural part will make it easier to keep it in place, as forcing it will require the use of a blow dryer and plenty of hairstyling products to prevent it from falling apart. It will also be most suited to the shape of your head.

A Final Word

Styling men’s hair can be challenging if you don’t know how to do it right. Whether you’ve got frizzy, straight, curly, or very little hair, there are ways how you can make hair styling easier and more glamorous. This will help make sure you look good on your auditions and, ultimately, improve your chances of getting booked as a young model.
