6 of the best free things to do in Norwich

6 of the best free things to do in Norwich

We’re all feeling the squeeze from the cost of living crisis that has made many of us reduce leisure spending to funnel the resources back to bills.

However, rather than stay at home to save money, deciding to do low-cost activities offers a unique opportunity for creative days out.

Norwich is known for its cathedral, but it’s also famous for being “the most complete medieval city in England”. This means there’s so much to see while walking around the city, so it’s easy to get around on foot. As an ideal location to ditch the stress and expense of parking, hop on the train from hubs like Leicester to Norwich for affordable access to the heart of this historic city.

Elm Hill

Somewhat of a misnomer, Elm Hill is a street full of Tudor buildings and preserved fronts. Stroll slowly down the cobbles, take in the shop fronts and eateries, and be transported to the sixteenth century.

Norwich Cathedral

It’s hard not to be impressed with the majesty of the architecture at this scale. Norwich Cathedral dates back almost a thousand years but is very well preserved. If you prefer to remain outside, wander around the gardens that are inspired by Japan and herbaceous elements. There’s even a café for a quick bite! Although admission is free, donations are welcome.

Riverside Walk

To take in the city with an accessible and easy route, meander along the riverside on a circular walk. You should spot some winged friends on the water, with species like swans and cormorants regularly gracing the river. If you’re lucky and keep your eyes peeled, you could even spot otters.

Norwich Market

Love to be amongst the hustle and bustle of local suppliers and creatives? Visit Norwich Market to see the best that local and independent businesses have to offer. The market is only closed on Sundays, so there should be plenty of opportunity to celebrate Norwich produce.

Plantation Garden

When it comes to gardens, the Victorians really knew what they were doing. The Plantation Garden dates back to this era and has been lovingly refurbished. You’ll find a calming combination of a fountain, grass, trees, softly curved paths and flowers.

Sainsbury Centre of Visual Arts

Based in the well-regarded University of East Anglia, this is an ideal location for visitors who want to experience a location which fosters pioneers in the study of art. The centre is a gallery and museum that often puts on interesting exhibitions, talks and events, so why not take a look ahead of time to see if there’s anything you’d enjoy?
