Iceni Review

Did you know that standing up at a desk can burn more calories than sitting? What if I told you there is evidence to show that sitting at a desk for long periods of time can negatively affect your health or that standing up can make you more productive?

Standing desks can be prohibitively expensive and no one wants to buy a whole new desk when they have a perfectly good one already. This is not an issue anymore as Varidesk have commissioned an adjustable height desk that can go on any existing desk or table. At a fraction of the cost of a full standing desk the 36 is one of a group of standing desks aimed at those who spend a large portion of time standing up at a laptop or computer throughout the day.

I first became aware of the benefits of standing up working about 4 years ago, but when I investigated the cost of a standing desk, I couldn’t justify the cost, so instead I used my kitchen work surface. However, this had its drawbacks as I soon found out the height was too low and I suffered RSI, so I went back to sitting.

The Varidesk goes that one step further and has varying height making it suitable for a wide range of heights and I found the perfect height for me within minutes and have no looked back.

As a work from home mother I spend a lot of my time during the day working from a desk. I also have a small toddler at home and sitting would often cause her to want to be on my knee tapping the keyboard too – not much work got done. Since having the Varidesk this problem has abated and my daughter happily plays next to me on the floor whilst I work.  If she is upset, I can hold her and still type easily and even multitask by popping on a babycarrier with her in whilst working. Something I could never have done when sitting down.

“Bodies are not meant to be still during the day, for prolonged periods of time.”

I am more productive every day now I am standing. I feel more focused, happier and no longer suffering RSI. The extra bonus of the desk is it can be lowered down to be used seated also, for those who do not want to stand.

I can’t rave about this enough. Its spacious enough for a laptop and a second screen (with even enough space on the top self for an iPad stand. Or if you have a tower unit you could easily fit 2 screens on the desk, with clean lines it doesn’t look out of place, its coating makes it hardy and easy cleaned and raises up the screen area from the typing area meaning you don’t have to raise your screen or strain your neck either.  Perhaps one drawback is the weight, it’s a monster to transport and it’s not something you would want to be moving regularly.

All in all I would recommend the Varidesk Pro Plus 36 to anyone who wants to be more productive and look after their health by just making small changes.
