Norwich Business Improvement District scoops national awards!

Norwich Business Improvement District (BID) were celebrating last night (29/06/2017) after scooping not one but two top industry awards.

Norwich BID was recognised for their investment, innovation and stunning Christmas 2016 spectacular.  Christmas in Norwich last year saw the UK’s first Tunnel of Light emulate the Northern Lights and 280ft awe inspiring projections which transformed two of Norwich’s most iconic buildings, the Castle and City Hall.  Norwich BID were selected ahead of Falkirk BID and Managhan Town Team to be awarded Campaign of the Year. 

Featuring over 57,000 led lights and 5.6 miles of cabling, the 47ft structure became the first of its kind in Europe.  Shooting stars and pulsating LED beams of lights created a wonderland display of mesmerizing colours which replicated patterns of the Northern Lights.  Installed on Hay Hill for 7 weeks, the stunning visual Tunnel of Light experience became a selfie lover’s paradise and an Instagram sensation!   

Norwich BID was also recognised in the BID of the Year Award, up against Aberdeen Inspired and Falkirk Deliver.  Norwich was recognised for its vast achievements and innovations in making a number of projects a reality for the city centre; from free Wi-Fi to the VisitNorwich App to the City Hosts to the Murals to the City of Stories destination marketing campaign and to the Christmas spectacular.

Stefan Gurney, Executive Director, Norwich BID said, “This is absolutely fantastic news and is testament to all the hard work the BID team did in making our projects a reality for Norwich.  The Tunnel of Light was absolutely stunning and became a national talking point resulting in over 1 million BBC Facebook views and a marketing/PR campaign which reached over 10 million people.  We were overwhelmed with the public’s reaction and we are excited to be bringing the tunnel back to the city later this year.  We look forward to delivering more fantastic projects for everyone in Norwich to enjoy”.

The vision was to make Norwich the number one place in the East of England to visit at Christmas and the campaign resulted in national coverage on an unprecedented level and increased footfall figures.   The Tunnel of Light became a media hotspot, featuring in numerous listings for the top 5 places in the country to visit during the festive period.

Opening on Thursday 17 November 2016 the tunnel received over 10,000 visits during the first night and the Christmas period saw footfall increase by 2.5% compared to the period year. 

Awarded by the Association of Town and City Management the national awards showcase the achievements of Town Centre Managers, Local Authorities, Business Improvement Districts, community organisations and place making partnerships across the UK & Ireland. The awards provide recognition for the valuable projects that are delivered to improve UK high streets and town and city centres.

After a successful five years, the Norwich BID are now in the process of going through its renewal process and are encouraging businesses in the city centre with a ratable value over £30k to Vote Yes to retain BID services and projects.
